The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) suggests HIV testing for all 16- to 18-year-olds living in areas of the country with high prevalence rates, according to an AAP statement. Earlier AAP guidelines suggested testing only for youth who admitted to being sexually active. However, noting that one out of every two youth don’t know their status and that 70 percent of new HIV cases are caused by people who don’t know they’re positive, the AAP has revised guidelines. The AAP also suggests rapid HIV testing (results within 20 minutes), followed by immediate counseling and a traditional blood test.
