It is known as “the world’s largest and most visible HIV/AIDS fundraising event” for a reason. AIDS Walk New York, now in its 38th year, raised $2,102,534 during its Sunday, May 21, event—and donations are still coming in.

Over 10,000 people converged in Manhattan’s iconic Central Park for the four-mile walk and related events. The funds help support GMHC and other HIV and AIDS service organizations in the New York area. Founded in 1981, GMHC, which serves New York City’s five boroughs, was the nation’s first HIV and AIDS service organization. The nonprofit provides meals, housing services, HIV testing, prevention, legal help, advocacy, substance use counseling, mental health services and much more to communities disproportionately affected by the epidemic. According to GMHC.org, over 70% of its clients live below the federal poverty line, 36% are Black, 32% are Latino, 53% are LGBTQ and 45% are 50 or older.

The annual AIDS Walk has been a means not only of raising funds but also awareness about the epidemic. This year’s event included a four-mile run, a Masala Bhangra dance warm-up, a vogue performance by the iconic House of Miyake Mugler (included in the Facebook post below), a Paradise Garage dance party and, of course, free HIV testing.

This year’s presenting sponsor was ViiV Healthcare, the premier sponsor was Gilead Science and the grand sponsor was Pepsico.

As of May 25, the top five fundraising teams of AIDS Walk New York 2023 are:

  • Francine’s Team–A Promise to a Friend $78,580

  • The Church of Saint Mary the Virgin $63,512

  • MAC Cosmetics $43,847

  • Gift for Life/NY NOW $43,623

  • GMHC–Smooth Operators $40,382
