A new law in the Dominican Republican guarantees basic rights for people with HIV/AIDS on the island, but it also penalizes and criminalizes HIV transmission, the International HIV/AIDS Alliance reports. People who know they are HIV positive and do not tell their sexual partners can be sentenced from two to five years in prison, and people who intentionally transmit HIV, via any means, can be sentenced to 20 years in prison. Critics of the law say that it invades the privacy of citizens and their relationships.
