The New York City Board of Health has approved a ban on the sale of sweetened drinks in containers larger than 16 ounces at restaurants, street carts and movie theaters, The New York Times reports. Proposed by Mayor Michael Bloomberg to combat rising obesity rates, the ban is the first of its kind in the United States. The health board vote was the only regulatory approval needed to be binding in the city. Unless blocked by a judge, the measure will take effect in six months.
