How is IBS treated?

No treatment plan works the same for everyone, so you’ll need to work with your doctor to find what works best for you. Most treatment plans include dietary and lifestyle changes. These may include:

 

  • Increasing fiber in your diet;
  • Avoiding gluten;
  • Following the low FODMAP diet;
  • Increasing physical activity;
  • Reducing stress;
  • Getting enough sleep.

 

Your doctor may recommend medication to relieve diarrhea, constipation or abdominal pain. Probiotics may also help improve symptoms. Mental health therapies, such as cognitive behavioral therapy, gut-directed hypnotherapy or relaxation training, can also be used to help treat IBS.

 

Many people are able to successfully manage IBS with treatment, but if your symptoms don’t improve, talk to your health care provider.
